Susanne Cabrera, MD

Principal Investigator

Dr. Cabrera is a Professor of Pediatrics and the Max McGee Endowed Chair for Patient Care in Diabetes at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She is also the medical director of the Children’s Wisconsin Pediatric Diabetes Program and leads the Children’s Wisconsin (Very) Early Stage Type 1 Diabetes clinic, a clinic that provides monitoring and medical therapy for those with early stage T1D. Dr. Cabrera leads an amazing clinical diabetes research team and has had NIH, ADA, and Breakthrough T1D funding for several investigator-initiated and multi-site collaborative clinical research studies in type 1 diabetes (T1D). Her research has focused on environmental contributors to disease progression in those with genetic risk for T1D and on disease-modifying therapies in those recently diagnosed with T1D. She has been the site’s TrialNet investigator since joining the MCW faculty in 2012, leading our affiliate site’s ongoing involvement in TrialNet’s Pathway to Prevention study and previous involvement with two TrialNet prevention trials. Dr. Cabrera has co-chaired the national TrialNet Research Engagement Committee since 2021, has presented her work at national conferences, and enjoys mentoring pediatric residents and pediatric endocrinology fellows in their academic research.
